Data Privacy Training Roadshow 2024: Empowering DPOs in Visayas and Mindanao
The Data Privacy Council (DP Council), in cooperation with the National Privacy Commission (NPC), officially launched the first leg of the Data Privacy Training Roadshow 2024 on 13-14 November 2024 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. The two-day workshop attended by at least 360 participants was designed to equip data privacy practitioners, including Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Compliance Officers for Privacy (COPs) from across the Visayas and Mindanao regions with the essential knowledge and practical tools needed to strengthen data protection practices within their organizations.
Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga officially commenced the roadshow, stating “Through the roadshow, everyone will be able to help build a community of stakeholders and privacy practitioners that would serve as an avenue for responsible innovation in developing privacy resiliency.”
“The NPC is continuously developing programs that will encourage PICs (personal information controllers) and PIPs (personal information processors) to uphold data privacy norms and guarantee that the country complies with international standards set for data protection,” he emphasized.
Throughout the learning sessions, the training modules offered in-depth discussion on essential aspects of data privacy. Atty. Mikhail Josef Soriano, from the NPC’s Compliance and Monitoring Division, provided a comprehensive overview of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 in his session on DP 101. This was followed by Mr. Arran Mulvaney and Mr. Varun Joshi from OneTrust, who discussed DP 201: Operationalizing Privacy Programs. Mr. Elizer P. Betinol and Ms. Kate S. Cabanero of Reyes Tacandong & Co. led the discussion on DP 301: Conducting Privacy Impact Assessments. Atty. J.R. Robert Real, DPO of GCash, discussed DP 401 or Breach Management Systems, in which he shared best practices for handling personal data breaches. Lastly, Mr. Leyson San Juan, Assistant Vice President and Head of Data Privacy Compliance at SM Retail, concluded the workshop with a session on DP 402: Security Measures for the Protection of Personal Data.
Ms. Gelalyn V. Boquiren, President of the DP Council and Data Protection Officer of San Miguel Corporation, encouraged her fellow data privacy stakeholders to maximize the opportunity provided by the free training workshops offered by the DP Council and NPC. “Strengthening data privacy protection requires a united effort between the government and private sector. The Data Privacy Training Roadshow 2024 exemplifies how collaboration can empower organizations to uphold the highest standards of data protection and safeguard the privacy rights of every Filipino,” she added.
The training workshop was made possible through the support of key industry partners, including San Miguel Corporation, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, Reyes Tacandong & Co., OneTrust, GCash, FWD Health Insurance, Divina Law, and Ayala Malls.
