DP Council and NPC equip DPOs through Data Privacy Training Workshops
The Data Privacy Council (DP Council) and the National Privacy Commission (NPC) launched a series of data privacy training workshops that drew strong interest from data privacy professionals and organizations alike. The workshops, which covered key topics under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), were designed to provide in-depth training on data privacy fundamentals, risk management, and breach response protocols.
Throughout the series, attendees participated in four main modules: 1) DP 101 – Walkthrough to the Data Privacy Act of 2012, 2) DP 201 – Effective Privacy Management Program, 3) DP 301 – Conducting Privacy Impact Assessment, and 4) DP 401 – Breach Management Program. Together, DP 101 and DP 201 were conducted in 26 sessions, with over 1,400 participants, while DP 301 and DP 401 sessions had over 350 participants across five sessions. This large turnout reflects an increasing focus on data privacy compliance.
Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga emphasized the importance of such training, noting, "Data protection requires a proactive approach, continuous learning, and a commitment to implementing best practices. Through these training workshops, we are focused on empowering DPOs and organizations to embed data protection into their operations, and incorporating strong, compliant privacy practices that safeguard personal information at every level.”
The workshops were led by members of the Executive DP Council, Gelalyn Boquiren, Bernedict Lozano, and John Christopher Retardo, with volunteer lecturers from the different sectors for the four modules. For DP 101, participants were guided by Atty. Gilbert Joshua D. Urolaza and Atty. Avy Jude Marie M. Pakingan from the NPC-DPC Sectoral Engagement Committee. DP 201 through DP 401 sessions featured a roster of lecturers, including Gelalyn Boquiren, Dict Lozano, John Christopher Retardo, Jesse R. Linsangan, Atty. Francis Acero, Atty. Irene Victoria I.
