DP Council and NPC hold second leg of Data Privacy Training Roadshow 2024 in Pampanga

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the Data Privacy Council (DP Council) conducted the second leg of Data Privacy Training Roadshow 2024 on 25-26 November 2024 at SMX Convention Clark, Pampanga in pursuit of strengthening data privacy knowledge and compliance across the country. The roadshow brought together over 400 participants, including Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Compliance Officers for Privacy (COPs) from private and public sectors, providing free and accessible education and guidance on data privacy matters.

In his welcome remarks, Mr. Noel Ang, DPO of SM Investments, commended the DP Council for this initiative of ensuring that privacy practitioners are well-versed in data privacy knowledge and compliance.

Ms. Gelalyn Boquiren, DP Council President and DPO of San Miguel Corporation, introduced the purpose and objectives of the DP Training Roadshow. Ms. Boquiren likewise announced the establishment of DP Council Visayas Chapter which will serve as a focal group for the Visayas Region.

In his special message, Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga highlighted that “through the Roadshow, our aim is to empower data privacy champions throughout the country through enhancing compliance with the DPA and NPC’s issuances. I encourage everyone to seize the opportunity to learn from one another and instill a sense of responsibility in upholding the data privacy rights of every Filipino.”

The two-day learning and training session featured a roster of speakers from both the NPC and the private sectors. Atty. Anna Benjieline R. Puzon and Atty. Mikhail Josef P. Soriano of the NPC provided an in-depth discussion on the fundamentals of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 in the DP 101 module. Atty. Bianca Villarama guided the participants through DP 201, which focused on implementing an effective privacy management program. Atty. Krishna Aira Tana-Caguia facilitated DP 301: Privacy Impact Assessment. Atty. Erlaine Lumanog led DP 401, focusing on breach management programs, while Zar Betinol and Jonathan Mantua shared their expertise in DP 402, discussing security measures for the protection of personal data.

Deputy Privacy Commissioner Atty. Leandro Angelo Y. Aguirre emphasized that privacy goes beyond compliance and the application of the DPA enables the safe progression of technology. “DPOs are not gatekeepers. DPOs are drivers of change. They help organizations achieve their business purpose by harnessing creative thinking and innovating solutions that are strengthened by their privacy proficiency,” he stated.

Through the DP Council’s strategic partnership with SM Prime, SM Investments, San Miguel Corporation, Reyes Tacandong & Co., 7-Eleven, Wilcon Depot, GCash, Tala, AdSpark, KAT-C Business and Data Privacy Consulting, Inc., Park Inn by Radisson, Dito Telecommunity, CBSAC Enterprise, Puregold, and Probe Group of Companies, the roadshow’s impact and reach were broadened.

The NPC and the DP Council are planning to conduct an additional roadshow before the year ends to reach more participants.
