NPC brings Kabataang Digital Caravan across PH regions

The National Privacy Commission (NPC), through its Public Information and Assistance Division (PIAD), successfully conducted the Kabataang Digital Regional Caravan 2024, reaching thousands of Filipino youths across the country. This year's caravan visited schools in the Ilocos Region, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Southwestern Tagalog Region (MIMAROPA), and the National Capital Region (NCR), to deliver timely and relevant discussions on data privacy and online safety.

With the theme “Matalino, Mapagmatyag, at Mapanuri,” the Kabataang Digital campaign aims to equip the younger generation with critical knowledge and skills for digital literacy while promoting age-appropriate use of gadgets and applications. Students engaged in discussions on topics such as the Data Privacy Act of 2012, safe use of mobile phones and apps, exploring the internet safely, and understanding their rights as data subjects.

This year’s highlight was the 5th Annual Young Privacy Advocates Summit, held at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation in Cebu City, which empowered students to advocate for data privacy in their respective schools and communities through interactive activities.

Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga emphasized the importance of nurturing privacy awareness among the youth, stating, “In this day and age, our children have unprecedented access to gadgets and the internet. Ensuring that they have the necessary tools and knowledge to stay safe online is a shared responsibility among parents, educational institutions, and the government.”

“This is why protecting the data privacy of the youth remains one of the key focuses of our initiatives. We aim to raise a smart and privacy-conscious generation capable of making informed choices online and offline,” he added.

NPC Executive Director Atty. Ivin Ronald D.M. Alzona echoed this sentiment, “Many youths across regions in the Philippines have limited access to essential knowledge and skills on digital literacy. The Kabataang Digital campaign seeks to bridge this gap and ensure that youth from all backgrounds and locations can be knowledgeable on how to protect themselves online and exercise their data subject rights.”

In 2025, the Kabataang Digital campaign will expand its reach to more underserved communities and will focus on innovative ways to engage the youth in data privacy awareness.
