PH hosts international data privacy authorities to strengthen global cooperation
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) of the Philippines successfully convened the closed session of the 8th National Data Privacy Conference, gathering local and international data privacy experts to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborative exchange on 29 May 2025 at Solaire Resort, Paranaque City.
Delegates from 31 data privacy authorities worldwide attended the closed session, fostering capacity-building and knowledge-sharing among data privacy regulators and professionals from around the globe.
In his opening remarks, Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga highlighted the Philippines’ commitment to a higher level of global data privacy and protection through unity and collaboration: “We must remember that data privacy and protection challenges don’t stop at national borders, and neither should our solutions. It is only through strong international cooperation that we can build a digital world that is secure, inclusive, and trustworthy.”
The NPC has continued to play an active role in the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), a leading international forum for data protection and privacy authorities, for the past nine years. The NPC now serves as the first fee-funded secretariat of the GPA.
Mr. Alexander White, Privacy Commissioner of Bermuda, moderated a panel discussion on the benefits of membership in the GPA. He was joined by distinguished panelists, Ms. Lori Baker, Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Data Protection and Privacy, Adv. Tshepo Boikanyo, Information Regulator of South Africa, and Mr. Stefan Niederer, Senior Data Protection Officer of the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Germany. The panelists discussed the practical and strategic advantages of GPA membership, including opportunities for collaboration, joint initiatives, policy alignment, and global advocacy on emerging privacy challenges.
During the closed session, the GPA Secretariat also provided updates on the GPA’s ongoing initiatives, working group developments, and the roadmap leading to the 47th Global Privacy Assembly.
