NPC, DP Council Empower Privacy Advocates in Cebu City

Following its successful inaugural event, the Data Privacy Council (DP Council), in cooperation with the National Privacy Commission (NPC), held the second leg of the Data Privacy Roadshow on September 21, 2023, at the Summit Hotel Galleria in Cebu City in pursuit of promoting data privacy awareness and compliance. Through the DP Council’s strategic partnership with Insular Life, Aboitiz Power, Visayan Electric Company, Robinsons Land Corporation, Summit Hotel Galleria Cebu, M. Lhuillier, Straits Interactive, Cebu Land Masters and Yamaha, the roadshow’s impact and reach were amplified.

The Data Privacy Roadshow, which primarily aims to deliver free and accessible education and guidance on data privacy matters across all parts of the country is an initiative of the DP Council, headed by Ms. Gelalyn V. Boquiren, DPO of San Miguel Corporation. The second leg of the roadshow was joined by more than 240 participants from Regions 6, 7, 8, and the National Capital Region (NCR), comprising of Data Protection Officers (DPOs), Heads of Organizations, Compliance Officers for Privacy (COPs) and data privacy advocates.

Officially commencing the roadshow, Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga commended DP Council President Ms. Boquiren for spearheading this pivotal initiative. He also showcased the significant accomplishments and international recognition received by the NPC, “Initiatives like this not only benefit us, privacy advocates, but also cultivate trust among our constituents in safeguarding their data. As we build upon our growing recognition, let us amplify the impact of our efforts by also enjoining ordinary Filipinos across the nation in our shared mission of ensuring that privacy remains a fundamental right in today's interconnected world."

The roadshow featured a lineup of speakers from NPC, namely Atty. Anna Benjieline R. Puzon, Atty. Avy Jude Marie M. Pakingan, and Atty. Rainier Anthony M. Milanes, who discussed DPA Awareness, NPC Updates, and Road to Compliance, respectively.

Ms. Boquiren, introduced the DP Council, its officers and members. Formed through the NPC in August 2019, the DP Council serves as a consultative body, functioning as a mechanism for collaboration and a channel for knowledge-sharing between and among the sectoral stakeholders. According to her, “the DPC and its officers, with the support of the NPC DPC Committee, wish to strengthen collaboration in Visayas region by establishing sectoral point persons in the region”.

A line up of DPO speakers from the DP Council, including Mr. Ian Pajantoy, Atty. Michael Montero and Mr. Russel Hernandez, as well as Atty. Mark Louie Gomez and Atty. Krishna Aira Tana-Caguia provided guidance on achieving substantial compliance to data privacy regulations.

The Data Privacy Roadshow 2023 will hold its third leg in Davao on October 6, 2023 to further expand its reach in cultivating a culture of privacy across all parts of the country ensuring that no one is left behind in terms of data privacy and protection.
