Privacy Commissioner Naga joins the Welcoming Conference for UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression

The National Privacy Commission (NPC), represented by Privacy Commissioner Atty. John Henry D. Naga, participated in the Welcoming Conference for the United Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Ms. Irene Khan. The conference was hosted by the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) and was attended by distinguished heads and representatives of various government agencies, and members of the media.

The conference served as a platform for a meaningful discourse on how the country maintains a dynamic and open environment for opinion and expression. It encompassed discussions on the importance of openness, transparency, and the promotion and protection of human rights under the Marcos Administration.

UNSR Ms. Khan, in her address, underscored the complexity of balancing the right to freedom and expression with other societal and individual interests. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of learning and listening to both governmental viewpoints and community voices, recognizing the inherent value in understanding varied perspectives to gain a more comprehensive grasp of issues.

Privacy Commissioner Naga, in his meeting with the UNSR earlier that day, remarked “Today's dialogue serves as a testament to the Philippines' commitment in fostering a dynamic environment where voices are heard, and privacy is respected. We will continue to engage with the international community and further strengthen our policies and initiatives to ensure that both rights flourish.”

Prior to the conference, UNSR Ms. Khan commenced her official visit to the Philippines with a meeting with NPC officials, discussing how the NPC balances protecting the right to privacy while upholding freedom of expression. Her visit, scheduled from January 23 to February 2, 2024, will examine the situation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression in the country in the spirit of cooperation and dialogue.
